City of Agoura Hills Link

As you start your home search in Agoura Hills, here is some information about the city's history, neighborhoods, housing, schools, and parks.

Agoura Hills is located in northwestern Los Angeles County. The city is bordered on the north by Oak Park (in Ventura County), the south by the Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area, the east by state-owned land, and the west by Westlake Village. Agoura Hills has easy access to Malibu and the Westside, the San Fernando Valley and Downtown Los Angeles, as well as cities north such as Ventura and Santa Barbara.

Agoura Hills began its growth in the 1960s with the construction of US Highway 101. The first residential housing tracts were Hillrise, Liberty Canyon, and Lake Lindero. Residential growth continued throughout the 1970s when schools were built and downtown Agoura was established. In 1982 the citizens of Agoura Hills voted in favor of cityhood.  The 1980s was a time of tremendous growth with many large housing tracts being built which lead to the migration of people (many from the San Fernando Valley) wanting more open space and slower growth. During the 1990s, businesses and restaurants blossomed. A City Council/City Manager form of government governs Agoura Hills.

Agoura Hills housing consists of apartments to condominium and town home complexes to the prestigious neighborhood of the Morrison Highlands. Condo and town home prices range from the low $200,000s to the high $600,000s. The beautiful homes in the Morrison Highlands range from $1.5 to $2.2 million. And of course there are many great neighborhoods with homes priced in-between! If you are interested in a more rural-type setting, you may want to consider Old Agoura. Old Agoura is a community of custom homes that offers open spaces, a relaxed atmosphere, and properties that are zoned for horses. Old Agoura is surrounded by bridle paths and state park trails.

Another rural area is Malibou Lake. It’s located about three miles south of the 101 freeway, set in the Santa Monica Mountains. The two locations are Malibou Lake Mountain Club (MLMC) and Malibu Lakeside. MLMC operates similar to a stock cooperative. Homebuyers acquire title to their home and a long-term renewable license that gives them the right to occupy a defined area within the community. Homeowners become members of the Malibou Lake Mountain Club which operates like a homeowners association. Amenities include Malibou Lake, stunning views, boating, a beautiful clubhouse (suitable for events such as weddings), and lots of open space. Malibu Lakeside is a community established in 1926. A homeowners association that is active in maintaining the high quality of the neighborhood governs the community.  Homes in both MLMC and Malibu Lakeside are custom homes.  There is something for everyone in Agoura Hills!

Agoura Hills schools are in the Las Virgenes Unified School District. There are three K-5 elementary schools, one 6-8 middle school, and two 9-12 high schools.   Additionally there is one K-8 School of Global Education. This school focuses on academic curriculum with social communication, environmental and outdoor education, world studies, foreign language, and community outreach.

Agoura Hills has many hiking trails and numerous parks including Chumash Park and Old Agoura Park which features an equestrian arena.

Agoura Hills is home to the Great Race of Agoura Hills. The 34th annual Great Race was run in March of 2019.   The Great Race was voted Best Half Marathon in the US by active.com, a Top 10K by Runner’s World, and the Best Post Race Party in LA! Proceeds from the event are donated to schools in Agoura Hills and nearby Oak Park.
