Oak Park

As you start your home search in Oak Park, here is some information about the its history, neighborhoods, housing, schools, and parks.

The community of Oak Park is located in the eastern section of Ventura County bordered on the south by the Los Angeles County cities of Agoura Hills and Westlake Village, on the west by the neighborhood of North Ranch in Thousand Oaks, on the north by the Simi Hills, and east by the popular Santa Monica Mountains National Recreational area. Oak Park offers access to nature, numerous hiking trails, and relaxed suburban life. There's easy access to beach communities, the San Fernando Valley, and the West Side.

While Oak Park is primarily residential (single family homes, town homes/condos, apartments), in recent years several commercial centers have been built at the corner of Kanan and Lindero Canyon Roads. These centers offer residents shopping, restaurants, and other products and services. As with other communities in the Conejo Valley, Oak Park places great importance on balancing residential and commercial needs with wide-ranging greenbelts, access to hiking trails, and numerous parks including six neighborhood parks plus Medea Creek Natural Park and Oak Canyon Community Park which features a pond with ducks and turtles, a wonderful dog park, and seasonal splash pad.

Oak Park housing varies from apartments to condominium and town homes complexes with prices starting in the low $300,000s, to homes in the prestigious neighborhoods of Regency Hills/Chambord and Morrison Estates/Sutton Valley.  Homes in those neighborhood range in price from $1.2 to 1.6 million.  And of course there are many other great neighborhoods in-between.  All the neighborhoods in Oak Park are established and therefore have lovely mature landscaping.  Many residences in Oak Park are available for lease as well as purchase.

Although Oak Park is not an incorporated city (it’s overseen by a Municipal Advisory Committee), residents, through their perseverance and efforts, fought for their own school district which was formed in 1977: The Oak Park Unified School District. Today, OPUSD has three K-5 elementary schools, one 6-8 middle school, and two 9-12 high schools including a continuation school. Additionally, OPUSD features the Oak Park Neighborhood School.  This school is a preschool that follows the Reggio Emilia approach of teaching.  The popular school is on the Oak Hills Elementary campus.  Oak Park is one of the few districts in the state with a 0% dropout rate. Student performance levels are the highest of any K-12 district in Ventura County. OPUSD ranks 8th in student achievement in the state of California out of 1000 school districts. OPUSD is considered to be among the finest in the state (public and private) with its schools regularly receiving California Distinguished School, National Blue School, and other prestigious awards. If you’re looking for an outstanding school district, OPUSD should be on your list!
